Why a Plain Black Tee is Your Best Friend!

What a boring post you might be thinking… It’s just a plain black t-shirt. There’s not much to be done with that…
Well you’re forgiven for thinking WRONG people!

The lovely people at Tesco Home Panels sent me their black Ladies Scoop Neck Tee a few weeks ago and at first, yeah, I did think oh, what a boring thing to review… But I got thinking, they couldn’t have possibly sent me a better item of clothing for the coming Autumn/Winter days!

I love Supermarket fashion, I’m not going to lie. I love how affordable it is, how accessible it is and y’know what, they have really nice fashionable pieces! Tesco’s F&F is my favourite, closely followed by Tu by Sainsburys but to be honest, I’ll buy from any supermarket as long as I like the item!

Cotton Sustainability

This t-shirt that Tesco have sent me is made from 100% sustainable cotton, which if you’ve recently watched the Stacey Dooley documentary on BBC1, is such an important thing.
In the documentary we discovered that 15,000 litres of water is needed to grow the cotton needed to make ONE pair of jeans! That’s a HELL of a lot of water just for one pair of jeans, just think of how many litres were needed to make all the cotton garments in your wardrobe… Scary eh?

We saw Stacey drive across a desert in her documentary but it wasn’t a desert at all. It used to be the Amal Sea in Khazakstan which is now 3/4 dried up! It was shocking to see that local cotton producers had done this over a course of 50 years by tapping into the sea to keep their cotton fields supplied with water.

Tesco have fantastically recently pledged to using 100% sustainable cotton in ALL their clothing that they sell. Another reason to love my favourite store!
You can read about this on their own blog here.

How to wear the Tee…

Here’s a few outfits I put together using my black top

Denim shirt – Wish | Ripped jeans – Tesco F&F

Dress – New Look (SO long ago)

Skirt – New Look (3 years ago)

God I need to buy some new clothes it seems, haha! But you get the gist of what kind of outfits you could wear the top with so all’s good!

I definitely think I’ll be wearing this top loads over the autumn/winter, it’s just so versatile!

If you would like one yourself you can find them in Tesco’s stores, click HERE to find your nearest one!

Anyone else love supermarket fashion like me?

Can’t go wrong with a black tee! They always go so well with nearly everything, sometimes when you have a patterned bottom half black tee’s are great to go with them! I also love checking out clothes in supermarkets – great prices and their clothes aren’t so bad!

A simple black top is such an essential item! I love your styling suggestions, especially teaming it up with the New Look dress, that is such a great idea so you can carry on wearing pretty dresses in the colder months. The fact that 15,000 litres of water is needed to make 1 pair of jeans is astonishing. It’s great that Tesco are using sustainable cotton, I definitely need to check out their range soon. Thanks for sharing Liv <3 xx

I’m trying really hard to think if I actually have a simple black tee in my closet and honestly, I’m drawing a blank. Unacceptable – because you’re totally right with how versatile such a piece is.

Maybe I can find a nice one during my next thrift shop run!

I grew a love for plain black tops over the last couple of years. It is great that Tesco practices sustainability through the ingredients they acquire. Love that there are so many different ways to style the top!

My black T’s are a staple (and white T’s, but if I’m doing something potentially mess, I know better), in fact, I’m wearing one today under a chambray shirt (it’s 58F this morning but will be 79F later today). Thanks for the great styling ideas!

  13. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about that documentary, I really need to watch it! It’s so great that Tesco are only using cotton from sustainable sources now, I completely agree with you that some supermarket fashion is amazing, I often buy pieces from Tesco and Asda! The outfits you put together are so cute too!
